It is situated at the bottom of the Appennines where the Marche, Toscany and umbria meet in the Valtiberina. Its name comes from the oratory that was built by two pilgrims back from the Terrasanta. Its origin is X-XI cent. but its nowadays urban architecture is Renaissance.

It is situated at the bottom of the valley because of its commercial vocation showed by the biennial exhibitions of goldsmith's. Together with these, its image is associated to the Palio della Balestra, a costume recalling of an ancient match against Gubbio.

Its city centre is surrounded by the Medicee walls interrupted at N.E. by a '500 fortress conquered by Florence in 1441. Inside the town narrow medieval streets lead to Renaissance palaces in grey stone. The town is rich of art works: we mention the Resurrection and the Madonna Della Misericordia by Piero Della Francesca (civic museum) and the wooden statue of Christ Volto Santo(Cathedral).

it is possible to admire the many numerous works of other artists such as Matteo di Giovanni, il Perugino, Rosso Fiorentino. The town has been birthplace of other important people like Luca Pacioli, notable in other fields of the human activity.
