| If
Florence has been the capital of Renaissance, Urbino has been its ideal town; between the
Foglia and Metauro rivers, has kept for centuries its urban architecture. the Renaissance
structure attracts the visitor. Very important is the Ducal Palace that represents the physical features of the Renaissance no longer linked to defence purposes but to openmindedness. The building structure is harmonious, a work of the architect Luciano Laurana. Today the Palace is the official Marche Gallery which contains important works of remarkable artists: from Raffaello to Piero Della Francesca and Paolo Uccello. It's very interesting to notice the San Giovanni Oratory of the second half of '300, that behind the major altar presents a big fresco of the Crucifixion; other important places are the Cathedral ,San Bernardino by Bramante. In 1460 Raffaello's grandfather bought a building where, on the first floor the painter is told to be born; the house is a museum today. The panoramic site of the town is the Cappuccini Hill at the west of the town; the hill celebrated by the poet Giovanni Pascoli is site of colleges that give accomodation to the students in the several universities of Urbino. |
